“Christmas Morning”

It seemed, here on Christmas Morning, it all began again.

Penny opened her eyes, looking at the ceiling of her bedroom, illuminated with the light of early morning. Turning her head to the side, she saw Elliot lying next to her, fast asleep still. She closed her eyes and smiled brightly behind her pacifier. It was Christmas Morning and it had begun exactly as she dreamed it would.

She sat up in bed, turning to face him as she flipped the white ball of the Santa hat he was wearing away from his eyes. She didn’t wake him up, not yet. Instead, she sat Indian-leg style, put her elbows on her knees and rested her chin on her hands. She just wanted to look at him for a while.

She thought back to last night and how he appeared at her front door, like a last minute Christmas miracle. And having him lying next to her on this morning, was the greatest gift she could’ve possibly received. In so many wonderful ways, Elliot had changed her, literally and figuratively. She had the littleness in her heart. She had the innocence in her dreams, but it was he, this lightly snoring Daddy fella, who put it all together for her. He made all the difference she would ever need.

She traced the features of his face – his jaw line, his cheek bones, his eyebrows, the bridge of his nose. She loved to touch his face. It not only reassured her that he was, indeed, real and not just a figment of her little imagination, but it also reminded her how little she was next to him.

Now, they would grow together, explore together and find the new discoveries they didn’t even know were out there. It wasn’t about arriving at this point. That was always the dream and because it remained close to both of their hearts, they never lost that dream.

They began a journey together and learned what they needed, about themselves, about each other. And it was that journey which turned them from a Daddy and BabyGirl into an engaged Daddy and BabyGirl, prepared for a future spent living for someone and with someone.

And it seemed, here on Christmas Morning, it all began again.

With closed eyes, he smiled, but didn’t move otherwise. Penny grinned at him.

“Merry Christmas, BabyGirl,” he said in a deep, morning voice.

“Merry Christmas, Daddy,” she mumbled from behind her pacifier as she crawled up on top of him, a straddled her legs on either side of his chest. “And I am wet.”

“You are, huh?” he said with a chuckle as he opened his eyes.

And there she was, his blushing bride-to-be. She was as cheery as the bright red footed pajamas she wore.

There wasn’t any sickness within her that would’ve prevented him from proposing to her or committing his life to her. And yes, there would be many morning that weren’t as perfect as Christmas morning, but love had always had a funny way of bringing together two souls which were meant to be. And it was as if fate had become a bedfellow with karma.

He sat up and they kissed good morning … with the tips of their noses.

“Don’t you lose that pacifier, okay?” he said jokingly. “Pacifiers-r-us made that one to match those pajamas exactly.”

Penny nodded and embraced him around the neck tightly as he stood up and lifted her into his arms, carrying her out to the kitchen.

“Do you think Santa brought you a lot of presents for you last night?” Elliot asked with the Daddy tone.

She looked up from his shoulder, nodding her head yes in a very shy and hopeful manner.

“I think he did,” Elliot said, mixing up her morning bottle. “And I think he brought you lots and lots of presents. You know why?”

She shook her head no as he carried her into the living room and eased her down onto the couch. She settled into the cushions, drawing her knees up for a much needed diaper change.

But it was the surprise he took out of her diaper bag that started the jamboree of presents on this beautiful Christmas morning. Her eyes widened at what it was.

And her eyes locked on the object in his hand. Could that really be what she thought it was?
