I’ve been asked several times why I write from the perspective of the little.  95% of the time, I’m writing from the perspective of the BabyGirl.  Some have suggested that writing from a Daddy’s point-of-view would make more sense for me.

Every story has multiple sides to it, from his to hers to those of passers-by.  But I tend to believe that the most compelling story lies inside a BabyGirl’s mind.  But that’s merely my opinion.  And opinion is a perspective in itself.

I’ve heard that the Daddy/BabyGirl angle doesn’t apply to as many people as other combinations, whether that’s Mommy/BabyBoy, Mommy/BabyGirl or Daddy/BabyBoy.  But at the same time, I’ve heard from guys who say that they simple change the labels with their eyes as they read it.

And I’m fascinated by all of this.  The depth of character within individuals in this community is infinite.  I always smile when I see someone personalizing an experience as much as they can.  The nature of the word individual is just that … unlike any other.  And what this leads to is a never-ending list of possibilities … all of which being fantastic, but only one item on that list which is individually ideal for each of us.

I’m no different and that belief applies to me as well.

But a BabyGirl’s mind covers every spectrum of possibility.  She is both selfish and selfless at the same time.  Through sadness, she finds a reason to smile.  Sometimes, that smile has to be helped along a little by a guiding Daddy.  But to see her smile means that her mind is filled happy thoughts – even if just temporarily.

A BabyGirl will ignore you while also studying you closely.  When you walk into a room, she may remain absorbed by what TV show she is on.  But she also sees how you struggle to find comfort when you sit down.  A stiff back will often make a Daddy grimace.  A BabyGirl however, has the perfect remedy for an achy lower lumbar.

She takes from you and often takes a lot – of your time, of your energy and of your patience.  But you love her to death for more reason than you can list.  And though she takes a lot, she will give back more than she takes.  Her giving may not be in the some form as yours, but it is definitely there – ever-present and ever-heartfelt.

She is impulsive and jumps to conclusions, shooting from the hip sometimes before thinking about the consequences of her words and actions.  But she’s also the person who remembers the important things that sometimes go forgotten.  And she will come through where all others have tried and failed.

She’ll be fussy and impatient right before she finds a placid place of serenity in her mind.  And the constants of her journey of self will be what she clings to the most – those ever-presents that she knows she can rely on to be there for her, should the journey become a little too much for her to handle from time to time.

She may be lying there, awaiting her diaper change.  But it isn’t idle time for her mind.  Not at all.  Because her psyche remains in perpetual motion.  She is eternally buried five thoughts deep, at any given moment as a swirl of insecurities, worries and other random feelings fill her with mental scenarios that plague her need for security.

In other words, she games out every possibility of what could go right and what could go wrong with each and every moment of her life.

It must be thoroughly exhausting.  But it makes her an observer and it makes her knowledgeable and it makes her exactly what she is … someone who not only feels everything, from one end of the spectrum to the other, but also someone who more complete than she will every let on to being.

That is powerful.

That is beautiful.

That is compelling.

And that is why I write from the BabyGirl perspective.

She will melt you … every time.

“Sweetheart, take your diaper out of your mouth.  That’s not how the game works,” her Daddy said softly, trying not to smile at her innocent mistake.

“Daddy,” the BabyGirl started off emphatically, looking up at him from in her high chair.  “You tol’ me dat when we got home I wud be eatin’ my diaper an’ dat I wud have lots of fun doin’ it an’ dat it wud be really yummy.  So, here I yam, eatin’ my diaper an’ havin’ fun but it don’t taste yummy.”

“Sweetheart, I told you that when we got home, we were going to play a very special game,” he said, taking the diaper out of her mouth and slipping a bib around her neck.

“Yeah, an’ I’m a-possed-ta eat my diaper,” the BabyGirl said, watching him carry the diaper over to the counter next to the fridge.

“Well not exactly,” he said, opening the fridge and getting a few things out.

“Huh-uh,” the BabyGirl insisted, recalling his exact words from their car ride.  “We had jus’ pulled outta da Toys R Us an’ I a-member ’cause you changed my diaper as soon as we got outta da store ’cause I made a stinky in da store an’ you tol’ me you were gonna change me when we got in da car.”

“That’s correct.  And when we pulled out of the parking lot, what did Daddy say next?” he asked, doing something with the items he took out of the fridge, but keeping his back turned to her so she couldn’t see what he was doing.

“Den you said we were gonna go home an’ I was gonna get a special bedtime snack ’cause I had been a good girl an’ not begged you to buy me every pink ting I seen in da toy store,” the BabyGirl babbled, certain she was right about this.  “An’ den you tol’ me dat I was gonna eat my diaper.”

“No,” her Daddy said, turning around while holding the diaper flat in his hands.

He walked over to her and placed the diaper on the plastic high chair tray in front of her.   She looked down at the diaper to see a dark brown and dark tan sludge in the middle of it.

“Daddy, I didn’t do dat,” the BabyGirl said as her Daddy took her wrists and put them behind her back.

“I know you didn’t do that, baby. I did,” her Daddy said, walking back around in front of her, sticking his finger in the poopy-looking sludge and then licking his finger.  “It’s chocolate pudding and butterscotch pudding and little marshmallows.”

The BabyGirl looked down at the sludge and then back up to her Daddy and then back down to the sludge and then back up to her Daddy.

“Daddy didn’t say you’d be eating your diaper when we got home,” he said with a smile.  “Daddy said you’d be eating out of your diaper when we got home.”

The BabyGirl stared at the pudding sludge in the diaper in front of her for a few seconds.  And then it finally registered.  She plunged her entire face into the diaper, her Daddy grabbing hold of her hair in the nick of time to prevent it from getting chocolatey. 

The BabyGirl ate everything inside that diaper and then sat back up.  Her face was a mess but her eyes spoke volumes of the littleness she had just plunged into as well – along with the self-discovery that you can have your diaper and eat it, too.

25 “Little Thoughts”

She put herself through college, going to classes from 8 am-4pm and then working from 5pm to midnight as a waitress at a nearby grease spoon diner.  She would then go home, get a shower, get a bite to eat, do her homework and sleep for the four hours remaining before she got up and did it all over again.

She did this 5 days a week, 9 months a year for 4 years.  On Saturdays, she worked a first shift internship and then a second shift at the diner.  On Sunday mornings, she volunteered at a soup kitchen, coming home in the afternoon and regressing until Monday morning.

She knew her Daddy was out there, somewhere … waiting for her.  She just hadn’t met him yet.  But until that first meeting, she was going to drive straight ahead with her life, achieving every success she endeavored and overcoming every obstacle in her way.

She graduated at the end of those 4 years and was hired as a paralegal almost immediately.  But she wasn’t hired because of perfect grades or because of overwhelming knowledge.  Good grades she had and the knowledge she still needed she would learn.  But this BabyGirl was hired because of something that dazzled in the twinkling of her irises.

She had determination and everyone who met her could see it in her.  They all had the same thought about her:  “I want a little bit of what she’s got.”

Instead of wanting something, she went out and got it.  Or, if she knew she couldn’t get it yet, she prepared herself for the day she would finally get it.  But never once did she believe that it wouldn’t happen.

Chance favors the prepared mind and sometimes we find what we’re looking for when we least expect it.

Can you believe it?  The first lawyer she worked for turned out to be a Daddy.  Imagine if she hadn’t pushed herself through college to get that paralegal degree.

25 “Precious Pacifiers”

These two are cutie pies on their own, made of the usual: sugar, spice and all things nice – but also equipped with dimples, wiggles, pacifiers, baby bottles and stuffed animals.

However, when you put these two together, they could make a desert gush rainstorms.  And it’s not so much about how they look.  It’s about what they’re doing, the smiles on their face and the glimmer of happiness dancing in their eyes.

If you’ve ever been to one of the age play conventions like TeddyCon or CAPCon or The West Coast Jungle Gym or any of the other numerous age play gatherings, you wouldn’t be shocked to see such a sight as the cuteness in these pictures.

And every single one of them tells a different story.  If you think one BabyGirl is an adorable treat, try putting two of them together on a play date.

There’s twice the cuteness, twice the baby powder, twice the crinkling, twice the giggling and twice the proof that everything in this world is made so much better with a love so abounding that it can be felt just by looking at them.

One of the most adorable memories I have of a play date was when it came time for diaper changes.  Some good advice: Line them up right next to each other and do the whole diaper changing process in assembly-line fashion.  And whatever you do, make certain not to melt before you get the tapes fastened at their hips.

Also, don’t forget your cell phone because no such gathering of two sweethearts would be complete with an elaborate and full play date pictorial.

25 “Unforgettable Sets”

Admittedly, I am (and probably always will be) lacking in technological know-how.  In other words, settings on my cell phone not only confuse me but bewilder me completely. 

When I was born, Heaven was all out of tech savvy smarts on that day.  Friends, attendees at LLAMA munches, co-workers and on occasions, random strangers have helped me to figure out the simplest of technological tasks. 

But do you know who else has solved my techno-boggles?

BabyGirls.  I constantly reference that dear sweet angel whom God Almighty sent down to me at the absolute perfect moment in my life.

I once had her on her back with her legs up in the air as I was wiping her bottom clean … while at that very same moment, she had my cell phone in her hands – giving it the much-overdue software update it needed while also getting the settings right so that my phone automatically did those updates in the future.

Even now as I type this, I remember that perfect mixture of helpless innocence and independent know-how that she possessed.

I don’t remember when I stumbled across this series of pictures or where they came from, but by the low, blurry quality they have, I am assuming they were snapshots someone took of a video of this girl.

In these pictures you see a girl using a keyboard, presumably perusing the internet or playing a computer game on the TV.  At the same time, she is sitting there in nothing but a bib and a diaper – likely waiting as her lunch is prepared.

In a great many ways, she represents the intelligence to solve java script errors with a few key strokes while also representing the innocence of not being able to keep her pants dry.

There’s an amazing truth to this contrast of personality traits.  And when put together as they are in these pictures, it is clearly displayed that she is as independent as she needs to be while being as dependent as she wants to be.

You know that she will lift the Trojan virus off your laptop with no trouble but if you forgot the wipes, things are gonna get stinky around here in a minute.

And that is the sophistication of innocence.
