For the next six days and five nights, they would be escaping the fast pace that their lives had suddenly become caught up in. 

This primarily had to do with Ben’s promotion.  His career was advancing quickly and it was doing so because of his merit of work.  But with his promotion, he was made to work harder for the increase in salary.  With his new responsibilities came larger projects with bigger budgets and clients that were unreasonably demanding.  Ben always kept his head about him when dealing these new people like Carl Davenport, but it was taking its toll on him.  And Olivia could tell this change in him immediately.  Not only was regression a side of his personality, but it had fast-become a necessity in his life.  Little by little, Olivia grew more into the Mommy role and when at home, Ben found the relief from stress he desperately required.

In just a span of two months, Ben had gone from having a secret and a job with possible upward mobility to having an exposed heart (not just to Olivia, but to her friends – Gretchen & Rachel) and a job with achieved upward mobility.  Now it was a matter of balancing his emotions and keeping his promotion.  Stress had become his life and he sought desperately to avoid.  As he pulled onto the dirt road that led into the mountainous woods and to their cabin for the week, Olivia turned up the Mommy mode just a bit more – bearing in mind that her words and her tone would need to comfort him with maternal love while also control him with gentle toughness.  And these days, Ben needed both sides of every emotion, more so now than ever before.

“I swear to you, Livie, Carl Davenport might be the most difficult human being I have ever had to work with in my life,” Ben said emphatically as he took the turnpike ticket from the machine and stepped on the gas.

“Is he worse than that Italian businessman in Chicago who wanted you to get the city to make special considerations for his chain of pizza shops?” Olivia asked, understanding how stressful Ben’s architect projects could be.

“Carl Davenport puts everyone to shame. Bar none,” Ben replied.  “He’s the kind of person that most see as a nightmare to have to work with, or worse, to have to work under.  The more you do for him and the more personal sacrifices you make, the more he demands from you and the less he respects what you’ve done.”

“He kinda sounds like your mother,” Olivia joked while lowering her chin to hide her smile.

Just a Taste of it – Part One

“Olivia, what is this big surprise you made us wait until tonight to see?” Rachel asked, making Olivia sit between she and Gretchen on the living room sofa.  “You are not getting up until you tell us.”

“Which, by the way, I think it was really cruel of you to text us on Monday morning that you had something you were just dying for us to see.  Then you made us wait until Friday night to see it!  Who does that?” Gretchen added with a laugh.

“I know I made you wait and I’m really sorry, but if you knew how long I had been keeping this secret from you, you’d probably think that a week was nothing to wait,” Olivia said, sitting forward to pour Gretchen and Rachel two glasses of Pinot Grigio.  “But I needed you to see this big surprise and that wouldn’t be possible until tonight.”
